Operation and Maintenance Depot

Behind the scenes of the service line system, passengers and freights, is the operating and maintenance area.

What is a Depot

The depot is a "factory" which combines many activities:

  • Rolling stock maintenance

  • washing

  • sand refill

  • emptying toilets

  • refueling

  • stabling

  • test track

  • storage areas

The ideal of depot characterization

The depot design should enable an "assembly line" process, so that the movements inside the depot will be direct and quick, without unnecessary shunting.

Such a design will achieve the appropriate service for the vehicle in the shortest possible time.

Improper design of the depot will lead to a lot of failures during the rail operation, delays of trains, low service and cleaning level, and a low level of technical safety.
